Spider straps | Immobilization | Emergency equipment
Spider straps also referred to as extrication straps or spider belts are webbed straps or restraints employed in emergency medical service as well as rescue work. They are intended to restrain and prevent the movement of patients more so during emergencies concerning spinal or musculoskeletal traumas. The name ‘spider straps’ is given because of the look that the straps have when they are wrapped or buckled across the body of a patient.
SAB Spider Straps Features:
1. Immobilization:
Spider straps are mainly used to restrict the movement of patients usually in cases of automobile accidents; falls or any other traumatic episode. They are useful in cases where additional mobility results in the worsening of injuries.
2. Webbed Design:
These straps involve several webbed or interconnected straps which have the advantage of being adjustable with buckles across the body of the patient. This design can provide a secure and individualized fit.
3. Versatile Usage:
Spider straps can be installed everywhere as it is demonstrated below; in ambulances, emergency, and rescue fields. It is even preferable while handling patients who are in critical condition.
4. Quick Application:
Spider straps can be applied rather quickly, an essential feature when it comes to such sudden conditions as an emergency.
5. Multiple Attachment Points:
Spider straps are usually used with multiple anchor points that help the rescuers restrain the patient at multiple positions and axes of the body such as chest, pelvic, and lower limbs.
6. Adjustable Straps:
Due to the different sizes of patients that may require the straps, they are usually stretchable to fit and hug the patient.
7. Reinforced Buckles:
The straps can have very strong and reliable buckles that would assist in preventing the patient from harming himself. 8. Head Immobilization: In some models of spider straps, patients’ heads, and necks can also be restrained with head immobilization devices to prevent excessive movement during transportation.
9. Comfort and Padding:
Some beds come along with the spider straps which are padded or cushioned to ensure that the patient can be more comfortable in case the strap is required in the immobilization process, the formation of the pressure injuries.
10. Easy Cleaning:
It is for this reason that materials used in the construction of spider straps are mostly easy to clean and disinfect.
11. Patient Assessment:
Compared to other restraint devices, the spider straps do not confine the body of the patient and are easily adjusted to permit access to the patient’s body in case of a need for examination or administration of treatment.
12. Compliance with Standards:
Used genuine spider strap models are also specially crafted and built following existing safety and other regulatory measures on their construction.
Spider straps must still be a great asset to the emergency crews and medical team, especially in this traumatic injury and critical condition care. It affords the patients the maximum security in that they can hardly move within the vehicle before being transported and it can justify adequate medical attention to the patients. It again is apparent that education on the use of spider straps coupled with experience is required by emergency patients before they will be able to deliver proper care as well as the well-being of the patients as they immobilize and transport them.
